Thorndon Men's D Grade Squash are Wellington SUPERCHAMPS
All around the country, this weekend, squash clubs have been vying for the right to represent their regions in the graded national champtionships, referred to as Super Champs. Thorndon had teams in the C and D grade championship eliminations this year. The Super Champs are the premier club squash competition in New Zealand. Our Men's D Grade team have managed to win the tournament and quality to head to Gisborne for the D Grade National Championships.
Our Men's C grade team made the semi-finals and put up a fight but where not able to overcome their oponents. This is a further improvement on their previous year's performance and a further indication of the growing strength of squash at Thorndon.
The D grade mens team, made up of Simon Gray, Kevin Corillo, Richard Slade, Hamish Bain, Alan Edmonds, Ben Forbes and Jayden MacRae, all headed to Kapiti for 3 days of intense competition. Heading into the last game on Sunday afternoon, Thorndon and Mitchel Park were to play each other, both undefeated from the weekend of squash. The effective final went Thorndon's way in the first two matches, with Mitchell Park pulling back the third match, and then Thorndon sealing the win in the fourth, with a match to play. Thanks to Kapiti for hosting the event, and to the rest of the teams involved for the good natured, sportsman like play. This really brings the Thorndon name back to squash, both regionally and nationally.
Thorndon hosted the Wellington Regional C Grade Super Champs. With a hundred people stacked into the club from midday Friday to 6pm Sunday and teams playing two sessions per day it was a very intense experience for both the organisers and the players.
We want to thank everyone involved from the organisers and the very generous sponsor to the onsite helpers, doing the hard yards.
And Thorndon rose to the occasion! The club has received many thanks and congratulations on an event very well run in an increasingly pleasant location. Squash Wellington and many team managers sought me out specifically to say thanks and how impressed they were with Thorndon as a whole.
One of the big drivers for us to host this competition was to increase our exposure to other clubs to show off our energy, drive and facilities. This message seems to be getting out there, with the membership numbers growing steadily. Many Collegian members who attended indicated that they will be coming to Thorndon before the end of the year.
Look out Gisborne! From 8th to 11th September, our Thorndon Men's D Grade team will be trying to take out the national title.
