Squash Captain's Blog

March 1, 2010

Hello Squash Fans,

Well the Squash season has started in earnest and man, it's shaping up to be a big one for Thorndon.

We have six teams in the Autumn Interclub which is more than we have had in years and puts us in line with other big name squash clubs in Wellington. With the interest already shown I expect this to increase for the Winter Interclub season. I'm hoping for nine or ten teams for that, which would be more than Thorndon has had for many, many years.

Added to this is the number of players who are entering the various tournaments around the region. Again, more than has been in years.

The club is busy with all the Interclub Team Training, Club Night on Monday, Men's Interclub matches on Tuesdays and Women's Interclub matches on Wednesdays, Business House about to start up again on Thursdays and lots of private coaching from Capital Coaching. Weekends aren't so jam packed yet but Waaka and Andy are about to sort that out!

And that's not all, folks!  Two big events will be held at Thorndon this year. The Thorndon "B-Grade and Below" tournament in late May. We expect huge numbers to enter with $4,600 worth of prizes on offer. Look out for the advertising shortly. The C-Grade Men's Super Champs at Thorndon is in mid July and is the biggest event held in Wellington other than the Wellington Open. The place is going to be jammed to the gunnels for three intense days in for this.

So, it's the year for Thorndon to show it's mettle and we are going to support you all the way!

Do you want to go up a grade? Be the best you can be? Waaka Watene (ex A2, huge experience) is passionate about the potential at Thorndon and has agreed to manage a program of improvement for everyone who's interested. He has a dream! Thorndon wins the C,D and E Grade Super Champs with everyone off to the Nationals! The only caveat is that you must be on the NZ Squash grading list. Get fit, improve your skills, get cunning, get better and win, win, win. If you are interested in more info on coaching, drop a note to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. We are working hard on facilities and you will see some significant improvements to our already great facilities. Some of the projects due for completion soon are :

  • Refurbishment of lights on the squash courts.
  • New carpet downstairs, to match the new carpet upstairs.
  • Refurbishment of our premier glass court (Court 1). Refurbishment of the front wall, new paint, mending some glass and a new tin.
  • Re-opening of the convenient Halswell Street gate. This will be connected to the access card system giving easy access from Murphy Street and  even more parking options for those busy days.
  • Launch of the new Junior program which dovetails into the Squash Wellington Schools program in time for Winter Interclub.
  • Construction of the new Squash Court-side Bar. A new drinks and storage area upstairs between Courts 3 and 4 for much better access to squash resources and most importantly refreshments.
  • Launch of the new club T-Shirts!

We are going all out to continue to make Thorndon a big name in Wellington Squash. We are sure we'll attract all those Collegians members who are looking for a new club (both Juniors and Seniors, including their top A and B grade players).

The Box League has had a slow start to the year owing, I suspect, to the intense focus many people are putting into external competitions. But many people are still having huge fun without the need for the competitive intensity of externals. I think many people will return in the coming month or two as Tennis winds up and those players return to their Winter sport. I will have the March draw out very shortly. Please let me know what you think of the new format scoresheets.

I am still seeking people to help run the Junior Program. Please contact me if you are interested. I can assure you that there is much satisfaction in this role.

That's it for now.

Keep fit, keep playing and keep having fun.

Cheers!
