Thorndon Squash
| Squash Club Nights Sponsored by Thump Sports |
New Thump Sport FormatClub Night has a new format, with a more structured approach to fun and inclusive squash. For 10 weeks from 14th June 2010, club nights will run as mini one-night tournaments (from 6:30 pm to about 8:30 pm). You enter on the night by turning up and paying a $2 entry fee. All entry fee proceeds will bolster sponsored prizes from Thump Sports. Prizes will be given out as spot prizes and for divisional winners.
To keep the competition interesting, all games are scored first to 21, with handicapped continuous point-a-rally scoring. Everyone will take turns marking and refereeing, which gives you a chance to hone these skills too. There will usually be two divisions of play, for those that are ungrade up to E grade, and those from D grade and above. This will depend on the numbers turning up each night however.
Thump Sports will also come along for some demo nights, so you can see some of the latest gear and perhaps give it a go.
Who Can Come AlongAnyone who is a member or considering becoming one. Guests are welcome to come down and try out the facilities if they are thinking of joining the club. There is no fee for using the courts, balls or racquets for them (they'll need to bring $2 if they want to take part in the tournament format). We do ask that after their 2nd visit and they wish to continue coming along that they join as a club member.
What Do I DoCome down to the club from about 6:00 pm, wander into the squash area (follow the outside landing) and let a member know that you are new and here for club night. They'll show you the ropes and make you know to the club night coordinator.
What Do I NeedSome gear to do some running around in (squash is energetic) and some non-marking sports shoes.
If you've got a squash racquet, that is good. If not, the club can lend you one for the night (you'll need to buy one if you want to join and keep playing though).
The club supply squash balls for club nights.
What Else HappensA lot of members head down to club night from 5:30 - 6:00 pm, depending on court availability, they'll jump on and just have a bit of a warm up or hit. A cut down version of squash is often played by several people on a court at once , called three-quarter-court. This is great for developing your skills of driving the ball long and down the wall.
