2017 Tennis club championships

The Thorndon club championships 2017 have been scheduled for 1-2 April with a ‘back up weekend’ the following weekend in the event of poor weather.

The following categories will be played on the weekend:

  1. Men’s open singles (quarterfinals and onward) – Saturday only
  2. Men’s open doubles
  3. Women open singles- Saturday only
  4. Women open doubles
  5. Masters mens doubles (to be played on grass) 50 years of age and over- Saturday only
  6. Mixed doubles- Sunday only
  7. Junior 12 and under, 14 and under and 16 and under boys and girls- singles played on Saturday, doubles played on Sunday.
Junior club championship matches prior to the finals will be played the weekend prior. Men’s singles will likely require a round of 16 so one round of matches will be played on the preceding Thursday and/or Friday night from 6pm onwards. All interclub mens players (from Premier 1 down to mens 3) will be automatically entered into the men’s open singles draw and all interclub womens players into the women’s open singles draw. Please let me know by 20 March if you do not wish to play or if you know of interclub players that are not wanting to play. Interclub players will not be automatically entered into the double’s draws so if they wish to play doubles please let me know and who your partner will be. The closing date for entries is 20 March so non-interclub players wishing to play or interclub players who wish to play doubles, please email Ben at benvolz1640@live.com. Alternately, a poster will be up in the club room from this week onward for players to sign up. Junior players/ parents please email Graeme Jarvis at Graeme.Jarvis@gmail.com as he will be organising the junior events. We’d really encourage players to sign up. Their are categories to suit more social players (masters and mixed doubles) through to more serious competitive players (open mens and womens). For those who are not wanting to play competitively, the bar will be open all day on Saturday and Sunday. The men’s final will be scheduled for around 4.30pm on the Saturday which will likely feature premier 1 players, so it would be a great opportunity to see some of Wellington’s best players in action. Players are eligible to enter a maximum of 2 different categories. The cost of playing will be $10 per player for up to two categories or $5 if players play in only 1 doubles competition (Juniors will be free). This will cover the cost of tennis balls for the weekend, engraving, prizes for winners and a BBQ to be held on the Saturday evening. The draws for the weekend will be emailed out on the Monday prior to the weekend.
